"It seems every Perl hacker I spend any more than five minutes with these days is neck deep in JavaScript."
Boy, ain't that the truth! My biggest disappointment in perl has been in trying to get larger groups working together well, but unless all of your coders are at the same skill level, its hard to get past maybe three.
But all is not lost. Many of the concepts that made perl such a big deal in the past are now porting to other languages. CPAN has been a huge influence. Now even for javascript. Who knew? But it's all a good thing.

It never ceases to amaze me the tanntges people go off on bla bla bla.The fact is your article is right on the mark. There is NO debate over which is the better language. I been at this for decades from programming in assembly for Atari to UI design for Apple in Pascal. I've done major work in C, C++, BASIC, Pascal, Perl, PHP, and even the ever primitive and horrific COBOL.Being a programmer is not about the language. It's about the thought process and economics. If you are independently wealthy and want to sit in a corner in front of a screen creating masterpieces you are welcome to use any language you want and revel in it's technical depths. However, if you want to earn a living by producing a product or as a developer then the cold hard realities of economics are vital. If PHP is more popular and indentured as a buzz word among the ever ignorant human resources experts then PHP is what you damn well better know and profess to like.Read job ads for projects and 9 times out of ten they are written by people who don't have a single clue what the words they use mean. That aside, even if you want to produce your own product and think you can use any language you want think again. With any measure of success your product will grow and you will find yourself placing those ads for programming resources. Like everyone else you'll want talent as cheaply as you can get it and the most popular skills (PHP? Perl?) will be the most available and affordable. You can almost tell from reading the responses who is young and a bit full of themselves and those who have made real money in the market.
