After all this time with MT, I've decided to go my own way. If you've ever come to the same decision, then you know that MT's export is a pretty lame format that doesn't include all of the information you might need if you migrating to another system.
The solution I've come to is to create a MT template that exposes everything as a single xml document. Here's what I'm using so far:

Originally, we feared that the little ham was born too close to christmas to be able to enjoy his birthday. Instead, he gets a bountiful christmas, a birthday party with his mom and dad the first week of January, another party thrown by our neighbors the second week of January, and a third out of town party the last week of January. I guess I've been a little lax about posting pictures of Ben for freinds and family. As you can see here, he's walking. He just keeps us so busy now. I guess I'm going to have to get a video camera for christmas so I can record more moments like that one.

I just finished round 1 of resetting my office -- categorizing and boxing up all of my technical books. That took some time. In the end, I'd guess there's about eight to ten thousand dollars worth. I moved all but about a thousand dollars worth to public storage. Come spring, I guess I'm going to get rid of them.
