I have actually payled with Ruby and RoR. It's definitely nice. Really like the concept.But I find that once you get to know it, Django is just as fast to develop with as RoR, plus it's Python!!!And yes, RoR is not exactly a speed demon. =PIf you are looking for an alternative, Lift might interest you. It's based on Scala (runs on the Java VM), and is very innovative in a lot of ways.
